At the Movies......

High Art:

Syd(Radha Mitchell) is a young woman driven by her ambition to become someone of importance at a magazine called Frame.

A leaky roof takes Syd from the apartment she shares with her boyfriend to her upstairs where she meets her neighbor Lucy(Ally Sheedy). Lucy, a once celebrated photographer. lives with her lover Greta (Patricia Clarkson), a former German Fassbinder actress. In Lucy's world heroin rules supreme over any other concern. Immediately, the two women are attracted to each other. Syd learns of Lucy's famous past and begins to encourage Lucy's comeback. Their relationship complicates as the two women make room for each other in their lives.

Something About Mary:

Okay, so this is a romantic comedy... but it's also a Farrelly Brothers film, and if you saw Kingpin, you know the levels to which their humor can sink. They're not afraid to look at some pretty gross and weird aspects of human life and try and find humor in it. Of course, flatulence and bathroom-humor jokes are nothing new, but they do get laughs. That the Farrelly brothers are applying that brand of humor to the romantic comedy genre is what the "hook" of this film is... and I think it'll be something that audiences who enjoy this type of humor will love. An additional interesting angle is that Diaz and Dillon have been dating in real life for years. Teenagers are a major factor in today's movie industry, and I think they will in particular love this movie. I personally didn't like Kingpin much, but I did enjoy Dumb and Dumber, and that film had a romantic angle, as well, so we've seen that the Farrelly brothers can combine these 2 seemingly separate genres (toilet humor and touching romantic comedies). This sounds like a fun romp for those not easily offended.

Dirty Dancing:

Still one of our favs...........

Johnny: I've never known anybody like you, Baby. You look at the world and you think you can make it better. If somebody's lost, you find them. If somebody's bleedin'...
Baby: Yeah, I go get my daddy. That's really brave. Like you said.
Johnny: That took a lotta guts to go to him. You are not scared of anything...
Baby: Me? I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw. I'm scared of what I did, of who I am. And most of all...I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life, the way I feel when I'm with you. (Love that line..)
